Lori_Sarah In case you have been living under a rock the past week – then you may have missed that at 41, Sara Blakely was named by Forbes magazine as the youngest female Billionaire.  Sara is the founder of Spanx.  I could not be more thrilled for her.  I first met Sara 10 years ago – when we were both featured in Georgia Trend magazines 20 under 40 selection.  She is one of those very special people who you know is going to do tremendously well.  She is very personable, caring and compassionate.  Another member of the class that year was then Atlanta Falcon Michael Vick. I certainly felt like the underachiever of the group!

A few years later, I had the opportunity to attend the launch party of Sara’s Foundation – she named the “Give a Damn” party.  It was a wonderful event in Atlanta which raised over $600,000 and provided 278 scholarships for young women in South Africa.  Jewel performed and Sir Richard Branson attended and gave each of us a copy of his book “Loosing my Virginity”.”    Sara also gave each of us one of her now famous Red Backpacks.  She considers it a good luck charm.  I seldom travel without it.  In the picture with Sara and I, she is holding a photograph I gave her of some of the Savannah Junior League members – which I was a member of and now am a sustainer.  Sara had donated proceeds from the sale of Spanx to Junior Leagues throughout the country – to support philanthropic issues for women.  It was great to get to thank her personally for her contributions to the Savannah Junior League.

Through the years, I have had the opportunity to meet and photograph some pretty amazing people.  It always excites me when I see one of them in the press being recognized for their continued success.  Sara is a wonderful role model for all women.  {Not to mention being the best thing that has happened to our butt’s since sliced bread!}
You should keep an eye on her…
This woman is going to continue to amaze us all!

Motivation Monday: How Sara Blakely creator of Spanx has inspired me

It’s Motivation Monday and today were going to talk about Spanx.  Have you heard of it? If not you probably will when Sara Blakely founder of Spanx graces the March 26th cover of Forbes as one of this year’s billionaires.  At 41, Sara Blakely is the youngest female to be in the billionaire category for this year.

I sat and read the Forbes article of Sara Blakely and found myself inspired and motivated.  What inspired me most was not that she was a billionaire, but her drive and determination to start her company.  The fact that she thought her life was going in one direction and something changed it, is something I think most of us can relate to.  She talks about why she created Spanx, how much money she started with (much smaller than I ever thought), the tragedies that occurred in her life, people she looked up to in the business world and the little tidbit of why Spanx is spelled with an X instead of an S.

The fact that Sara Blakely put herself out there time and time again after being turned away multiple times is inspiring.  It made me think of this quote:

“Fear is what stops you…courage is what keeps you going” ~ Unknown

All of us have dreams and ideas and a lot of times we stop ourselves because we fear the outcome.  Maybe we’re scared to hear the word no, or scared someone is going to ridicule us or scared of truly believing we deserve the things we really want.  The fact of the matter is we should set aside the fear and go after what it is we want. Whether it’s fitness, business or personal related they are bound to positively effect all aspects of your life. Of course it may seem a little scary, but that’s kind of what makes the ride the adventurous one it is.  The ride you can look back and think, I’m so glad I didn’t do it any other way.  Who knows, maybe you’ll end up like Sara Blakely “on the cover of Forbes magazine” (yes, you must sing this line as you read it:)

Have a fun and fit day, Chicago
